Germany is not really known for its affordability, but it remains one of the most sought after destinations in Europe; and why not? This country is known for the bratwurst, some of the best beer in the world, and more. If you’re planning on going to Germany and you want to do it cheap, then you’re in the right place.

Flying to Germany need not cost you an arm and a leg. The trick is to look for discount airlines which offer fares at considerably lower rates than the mainstream airlines. While the general rule of thumb is to book your flight three months or so in advance, you can opt for the other extreme – book at the last minute. Booking in advance will ensure lower rates but in extreme cases, you can find last minute flights (a couple of days or so before the departure date) for even cheaper. Check the German National Tourist Office for particulars. EuroCheapo is another good website.

Once you find your to Germany, consider using public transportation. Much like many modern European countries, you will find the railway system very efficient. Even better, it is quite affordable, freeing up your euros for other expenses.

While Germany has more than its share of expensive and luxurious hotels, you will also find a lot of budget and backpacker accommodations. These are your best bet when it comes to your lodging. Again, the German tourist office has an extensive listing of budget accommodations under 40 euros.

Don’t think that you have to spend tons of money to enjoy yourself in Germany. There are many sights to see for free (or cheap). Consider museums, the Berlin Wall, picnics, and art galleries.

Traveling cheap does not mean you can’t have a worthwhile experience – even in Germany.
