Five Romantic Things to Do in Berlin

in City Guides, Sightseeing

This guest post is by Sonja Franke from Escapio.com.

Although often overlooked in favour of its more traditionally romantic counterparts of Paris and Venice, Berlin is a surprisingly romantic city for those looking for a city that offers surprises and an eclectic mix of old and new. Coupled with a distinctly different Berlin boutique hotel, get ready for the ultimate unusual lovers getaway.

1. High Tea

High tea is perhaps considered a traditionally English pursuit, but Berlin also has a couple of places to experience this slice of old world good grace. A set price per head buys a couple an afternoon of delicate cut sandwiches, handmade cakes and pastries, and a selection of coffees and teas. High tea is a perfect way to spend an afternoon, and places like the Ritz Carlton will prepare a full picnic basket for two full of delectable goodies to take away.

2. Charlottenburg Palace

The gardens (and palace) of Schloss Charlottenburg were built in the 17th century and this richly appointed royal palace and sweeping gardens are a popular attraction for tourists and locals, as well as romantic day out for two. A picnic in the royal gardens is a royally romantic experience, with the on-site Belvedere tea house and Orangerie coffee house on hand to top up the number of rest stops on the way around the vast estates.

3. Massage and Day Spa

A couples massage and day spa is one of the most romantic and intimate ways to ease the aches and pains of a day spent walking through the delights of a sprawling Berlin. There are many places in the city that offers this service, with the majority of them being in and around Mitte. The popular Mitte district is one of Berlin’s most vibrant areas, balancing historic building facades with clean and modern architectural lines and a thriving art culture.

It is also the home of the Soho House Berlin, a boutique hotel in a Bauhaus former department store. While the Soho House (like it’s counterparts in London and New York) offer the finest appointments (think rainforest showers and thick plush bathrobes), it pays unabashed homage to the 1920s. All of the 40 rooms are decorated in Art Deco style, with many even having a vintage record player with a selection of vinyl discs to be spun at guests leisure.

4. Boat Tour

A sunset boat ride on a private cruise is one of the most romantic ways for a couple to see Berlin. While most of the Berlin boat tours on offer are for larger groups, it is possible to hire a boat just for two – either with a guided tour in your native language, or simply left in peace to enjoy each other’s company. The Spree is one of the prettiest waterways from which to view the historic Prussian architecture, and a bottle of wine and some finger food makes this couple of hours even more enjoyable. For autumn visitors, it is important to take warm clothes though, as the wind coming off the water in Berlin’s cooler months can put a dampener on romance pretty quickly!

5. Romantic Dinner

Dinner for two is a romantic classic for a reason, and it is here that Berlin comes into its own. While the famous rotating restaurant in Fernsehturm is a popular choice, there are hidden gems that are not heavily trafficked by tourists. Seeresidenze am Müggelsee is a lakeside restaurant devoted to a romantic atmosphere and beautiful views. The degustation menu (between five and twelve courses) at the Balthazar restaurant is a real treat for foodies and a perfect end-of-day choice for couples. The Balthazar is part of Louisa’s Place Hotel, a five-star boutique hotel in the heart of Berlin, Kurfürstendamm. This romantic hideaway is built in a former Berlin mansion, and the combines the best in hotel appointment and service with a ‘temporary home’.
