If you are visiting Munich and want to make the most of your schedule, I recommend adding a day trip to Salzburg in Austria to your itinerary. Salzburg is one Europe’s most alluring cities, where the charm of Baroque and Renaissance periods come alive, especially at Christmas time. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997, Salzburg is famous for its beautiful gardens, palaces, museums and amazing views of the Alps as well as being the birthplace of Mozart and the home to the movie The Sound of Music.

This Salzburg day trip from Munich starts with a two hour train ride to Salzburg (and back) with your knowledgeable tour guide. Your guide will then take you on an informative  1.5 hour introduction tour of the Mozart and The Sound of Music sites of Salzburg. You will then be given three hours to independently explore this beautiful city. Salzburg’s Old Town is quite small, so you will have plenty of time to see the best attractions. Use your free time to visit the following sites:

Hohensalzburg Fortress
Situated on the summit of Monchsberg mountain, Hohensalzburg Fortress is known as the largest preserved castle in central Europe. Visit the fortress to check out the stunning architecture and the view of the Salzburg and the Alps. Great spot for photographers! Entrance fees – Adults: €11.00 Children: €5.60

Mirabell Palace and Gardens
This stunning garden is a superb example of Baroque landscape gardening and was featured in the movie The Sound of Music. The banquet hall is a historical landmark since this was where Mozart performed for the elite society of Salzburg.

Old Town
The Getreidegasse is a busy shopping district in the Old Town. The street is lined with stunning architecture dating from the 15th to the 18th century.

St. Peter’s Abbey
Founded in 696 A.D. by St. Rupert, this Romanesque basilica is one of the most popular attractions in Salzburg, renowned for its onion domes and high altar. It houses the oldest library in Austria as well as the nearby Petersfriedhof cemetery where aristocratic families and famous personalities are buried.
