Munich is actually a huge city as it is the capital of the largest federal state in Germany, Bavaria. With a city so big there is no way that you could see all it has to offer, so here’s a guide to the highlights if you plan to spend only one day in Munich. If you get the chance to spend more time here, Munich is also used as a base from which to go skiing in the nearby Alps.

Even the journey to Munich will be enjoyable as the main Munich international airport has regularly been voted as one of the best airports in the Europe. You can then transfer with ease to the efficient and clean S-Bahn and U-Bahn train system.

The most exciting time of year to go to Munich is undoubtedly in October when the world renowned Oktoberfest beer festival takes place. The vast collection of outdoor beer gardens as well as lots of traditional German food provides a huge insight to the culture of the country as a whole. Even if you miss Oktoberfest you can go to the Hirshgarten in Neuhausen which is the biggest single beer garden in the world with an 8,000 capacity!

Otherwise many people are just perfectly happy to wander around Munich and take lots of beautiful photographs. Although the city was more or less destroyed in World War Two it has been restored to amazing effect. One of the most attractive churches in Germany, the Frauenkirche, is right in the city centre. Known as the Marienplatz, the central square is incredibly beautiful and should be the first port of call for any visitor.

Car lovers might want to go to the impressive BMW museum and this is just one of a number of excellent attractions in the museum district. The Deutsches Museum is thought to be the largest collection of technical and natural science displays.

For a more tranquil way to appreciate the natural surroundings of Munich head to the Schloss Nymphenburg Gardens. Take tram number 12 and get out at Romanplatz, then just stroll around and enjoy the fresh air. This is a world away from the touristy parts of the city.
