Helsinki is the capital of Finland, home to over 1.2 million people, a bustling, cosmopolitan melting pot of Baltic influences that showcases some of the world’s best neoclassical architecture.

The best time to travel to Helsinki is between June through August when the climate is temperate and you get to enjoy up to 19 hours of daytime through the summer solstice. But with Helsinki’s numerous attractions, you can still enjoy a variety of activities all through the year and get a good pulse on the city’s vibrant culture.

If you have two days to spend here, get a Helsinki card (approximately US$44 for one day, and US$62 good for 48 hours) - an all-in one transport and entrance ticket. It comes with a complete guidebook of the city, unlimited access to all the public transport, free entrance to most major city attractions, discounts to some of the establishments as well as a free audio city tour via bus (approximately 1.5 hours) - a good way to get a general feel of Helsinki.

Bookmark the following must-see places: Suommenlina Sea Fortress, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a group of islands in the harbour outside Helsinki. Not only will you get to see the amazing coastlines of the city on the ferry ride to the island, but you can walk through the impressive fortress and see the castle. The Rock Church, Uspenski Cathedral and the Temple Square Church, all exquisite examples of the Art Nouveau and neo-classical architecture that the city has become known for. Hvittrask, Seurasaari Open Air Museum, Ateneum Art Museum and the Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art offer the best of Finnish art and masterpieces from all over the world.
