Saint Basil's Cathedral, Moscow, Russia
The capital of Russia, Moscow is one of the greatest cities in the world. It is steeped in history and has some of the finest museums and architectural sites to offer. Experienced travelers will tell you that this city is best discovered on foot, so as not to miss out on anything.
Your first stop in Moscow should be Red Square and The Kremlin, names known to practically everyone in the world. Be prepared to spend a day touring this area since there is so much to see. Start at the Resurrection Gate (which has recently been rebuilt), then go to St. Basil’s Cathedral, and move on to Lobnoye Mesto. The Cathedral is one of the most wonderful pieces of architecture in the city while the Lobnoye Mesto is renowned for being the execution site during the Communist times, albeit incorrectly. In fact, it was the area for official announcements of Stalin’s edicts.
The Kremlin is the current seat of the Russian government, and while some parts are closed to tourists, there is plenty to see. Visit the cathedrals inside the complex (Cathedral of the Assumption, Cathedral of the Annunciation, and Cathedral of St. Michael the Archangel), Ivan the Great Bell Tower, and the State Armory.
Art lovers (and even those who are not really into art) should pay a visit to Bolshoi Theater – the largest and the most popular theater in Russia. Whether you want to experience the opera or a ballet performance, there is nothing compared to watching it at this theater.
A riverboat excursion on the Moscow River is a great way to have an easy and affordable way to experience the city. You will spend about two hours and less than $10 for a chance to see sights such as the Kremlin, Gorky Park, Vorobevy Hills, Luzhniki Stadium, and Moscow State University.
Needless to say, the above is just the tip of the iceberg. Lots more sights and activities await you in Moscow.
