in City Guides, Sightseeing

The city of Athens, Greece is one of the most sought after destinations in the whole world. While a two-day stay will certainly give you the chance to experience a lot, if you have time to spare, three or four days will even be better. However, if two days is all you’ve got, then here are the places that you should not miss.

Day One
If you’re not an early riser, then try to change your ways for these two days. After all, you want to get the most out of your trip, right? Start your day early with a visit to Syntagma Square. Also, make sure that you watch the changing of the guard at the House of Parliament, which happens every hour. After that, take a leisurely walk in the National Gardens and walk towards the Panathenaic Stadium.

Follow this route as you continue to discover the city on foot: Vasilissis Olgas Avenue, pass Hadrian’s Arch and the Temple of Olympian Zeus and cross to Plaka. At this point, your feet will probably be tired from all that walking so take the time to enjoy the numerous cafes ands shops in this area.

In the afternoon, make sure to drop by Kerameikos and marvel at the ancient cemetery. Also visit the Ancient Agora and the Monastiraki Flea Market for some shopping. Before you retire, enjoy authentic Greek cuisine and entertainment.

Day Two
Enjoy a ride on the scenic funicular at the top of Ploutarchou Street in Kolonaki. You can also walk up the Lycabettus hill, which is a common path for many a tourist. Just make sure you are up to the 300m hike. Also visit Saint George, the iconic white-washed church.

Make full use of the Metro on your second day, and visit places such as the National Archaeological Museum, the Exarchia Square, and the Paleo Faliro. Make sure you bring your huge appetite with you and your bathing suit as well, as there are many areas wherein you can take a dip in the warm sea.

Again, at the end of the day, relax and unwind in one of the numerous cafes or restaurants in the city.
