One of the many beautiful parks in Riga
Latvia is one of the three Baltic states in Eastern Europe and is located next to Estonia, Lithuania, Russia, and Belarus. It is known for its beaches and medieval towns. Of the destinations in Latvia, Riga is the most well known. Riga is actually the capital of Latvia and is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The whole state is not that big and you can actually cross the area by car within a day. However, if you want to maximize your experience, I suggest making Riga your base and exploring the city and the surrounding areas in at least two days.
When is the best time to visit Riga? Anytime from June to the middle of September is perfect as the weather at this time of the year is very nice. This is also a plentiful season in terms of food, adding a gastronomic twist to your trip.
On your first day, allot time to go around the Old Town of Riga. This is the most popular destination in the city. You will certainly marvel at the architecture, much of which is influenced by the German culture. Also visit the Doma Cathedral, which is home to the world famous organ. Don’t forget to stop by the Occupation Museum, which will give you an insight into the history of Latvia. For some art nouveau, walk around Alberta and Elizabetes streets where the work of the great architect Eisenstein is showcased. If you still have the energy, go visit the TV Tower, St. Peters Church, and the Central Market. Before you retire, experience the night life in Riga and go clubbing.
On your second day, I would suggest going to some of the parks early. There are a lot of parks in Riga, and you can simply walk around or sit and let the atmosphere sink in. Of course, make sure you have your camera ready as these parks are very picturesque! In particular, visit Mezaparks (Forest Park), which is located just outside of Riga. This area used to be the residential area for the rich and famous prior to the war. Today, you can find the Riga Zoo as well as a theme park. Again at night, visit one of the many bars or clubs and celebrate your last night with a bang!
